Welcome
to The City of Louisiana, Missouri
Louisiana was called
"Land of the Golden Hills" by the early French
explorers and rightfully so.
The first settlers made
their homes here in 1808. Today, like the early settlers
many find Louisiana offers a quiet, peaceful atmosphere
for raising a family and operating a business. Three
years after the first settlers came here, Buffalo Fort
was built. In 1818 the original plat was laid out for
the city and it became the countys first county
seat.
Louisiana
now has 4,000 residents, many of whom are descendants
of the original settlers. Numerous lovely old homes,
many built from the local millworks of the period, line
the streets of Louisiana today. The downtown business
district has been placed on the National Register of
Historic Places due to its unique architectural style.
The State Department of
Natural Resources has said Louisiana has "the most
intact Victorian Streetscape in the state of Missouri"
Georgia Street Historic District has over 54 Buildings
in the downtown. Roughly bounded by Main Street to the
east and 7th street to the west (the site of the imposing
Greek revival Masonic Lodge).
Many homes are listed
on the National Register of Historic Places.
